Albania concluded voting in its parliamentary election on Sunday, with preliminary turnout reaching 41.41% by 6 p.m., according to the Central Election Commission (CEC). The figure is based on reports from 3,567 out of 5,225 polling stations.
This election is seen as a key test for Albania’s democratic institutions, as it comes amid the country’s ongoing EU accession talks. For the first time, diaspora voters were included, expanding the electorate to over 3.7 million.
Turnout varied widely by region. Dibër led with 48.3%, while Vlora recorded the lowest rate at 29.04%, a drop attributed in part to road closures for the Giro d’Italia cycling race. Tirana saw 47.78% participation, Kukës 45.73%, Elbasan 40.91%, Berat 38.51%, and Lezhë 39.99%.
Vote counting has begun, with final results expected in the coming days. Prime Minister Edi Rama is seeking a fourth term, while the opposition, led by Sali Berisha, aims to return to power after 12 years.
