Albanian opposition leader Sali Berisha has called for a protest on May 16, describing it as a symbolic appeal to European leaders over what he claims was a rigged national election.
In a meeting with senior Democratic Party officials, Berisha urged supporters not to be discouraged by preliminary international statements that deemed the election competitive, instead framing the protest as a fight for “free and fair” voting.
“This regime doesn’t respect a single democratic rule,” Berisha said, accusing Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government of operating as a “narco-state.” He pointed to international party resolutions as evidence of electoral irregularities, though no major observer mission has supported claims of systematic fraud.
Berisha reiterated his longstanding position that “there can be no free vote under Edi Rama” and framed the protest as part of a broader national and international campaign to defend electoral integrity.
