U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that Ukraine and Russia will begin immediate talks on a potential ceasefire, following what he called a “very good” two-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders as part of renewed efforts to end the war in Ukraine. “Conditions will be negotiated between the two sides, as it should be,” Trump said on social media.
The Kremlin described the conversation as “informative and sincere,” but noted no major progress. Putin reiterated that Russia is open to negotiations but emphasized the need to address what he called the root causes of the conflict.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump is “angry and tired” with both parties in the conflict and wants to see an end to the war.
Direct talks in Istanbul between Ukrainian and Russian negotiators recently produced modest results, including a prisoner exchange, but no breakthrough on halting the fighting.
